Lesson 8

A Whale of a Time

Genesis 1:20-23

Introduction
We notice in Genesis 1 that God created all manner life "after their kind", this statement is also true concerning the creation of all living creatures and mankind. A good way to remember the difference between the Bible account of Creation and Evolution is to visualise trees. With evolution there is a single family tree from which all animals and man sprang from. This is why evolutionists believe that man is descended from the ape. Creationists instead see family orchards; each tree producing only that species of living being, though allowing for great diversity within the group. This means that each species is different from the others. This idea will help us understand days 5 and 6 of Creation Week.

Day 5
"And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day."
On the fifth day of Creation God made the birds and sea life. Notice that they were abundant in number. The two types of creature that have far more types than others are birds and fish. The word 'whales' is a translation of the Hebrew word 'tannin.' This same word is used for 'sea-monsters' and 'dragons'. Basically it refers to all the huge sea creatures of the past, which may include the dinosaurs that lived in the sea. Evolutionists say that life began with the smallest of marine creature, but God's word mentions the creation of whales first. Though modern science tells us that whales are mammals, since they are warm-blooded, breathe air and give birth to their offspring just like us, humans, yet they cannot exist outside of water. Nevertheless, Genesis 1 does not speak of them as 'fish'. Some evolutionists put forward a rather ridiculous theory regarding the evolution of the whale, "There was a wolf-like creature named Mesonychide which fifty-five million years ago began searching for food in the ocean. It slowly evolved into the first real whale, Protocetus" (http://hem1.passagen.se/jooon/whales.html).
The term 'living creature' proves that animal life is different from plant life, therefore we know that plants have no real life or consciousness as some suggest. Only animals and men have 'life', though animals do not have a spirit.

Brought Forth
Theistic-Evolutionists, who try to combine Creation and Evolution together, point at Genesis 1:20 as proof that all life evolved from a fragile blob in the water. They see the water rather than God creating the creatures. They go on to say that marine life evolved into bird life over billions of years. Rather by trying to read something into this Scripture text we should let it speak for itself. 'Bring forth' - 'brought forth' - 'abundantly' - 'multiply' all refer to one fact, the water and sky 'swarmed' with life.

After their kind
Each created thing is a part of a 'kind' or species. Fish cannot mate with birds. Evolutionists regard DNA as evidence of gradual transformation of one species into another (or new species). Physically and chemically animals and plants are similar, but this should be no problem since they were all created out of the elements found in the ground. Each kind is different from the others. Dogs and cats have never really got on well together. Evolution has not solved the problem by bring forth cogs or dats. No species can go beyond the structure of its own kind. This means that birds will remain birds despite their wide variety, and fish will remain fish to the end of time.

Conclusion
God pronounced the creation of birds and marine life good, therefore cannot be perfected. Don't miss the fact that God 'blessed' them. God cares for all animal life, he watches over them and is concerned for their welfare Matthew 10:29 "Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father" and Matthew 6:26 "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them."
Evolution suggests that marine organisms came first, then land plants, and afterwards birds. The Bible has a different order of creation; plants came first, then marine creatures and birds appeared simultaneously. It all comes down to if we really believe the Bible or not.
