As it was in the Days of Noah

“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (Genesis 6:1-8).

Using the same text as in our previous study, this week we will consider the similarities between Noah’s Day and the days leading up to the Second Coming of Christ.

There were Giants in the Land
There are giants in our land too, but not the human kind. These are the giants of evolution, obscenity, false religion and vain philosophy:

a) Evolution: This giant was erected by Charles Darwin and is promoted by our schools, media and countless churches. The sole aim of the evolutionary theory is to dethrone God, especially in His role as Creator. How can we defend the truth from this giant?

b) Obscenity: This giant covers every perversion in society today. Such perversions are the outcome of believing the idea that man is a product of evolution, for if he descended from the animals, then he may as well live like them. If God is not Creator, then there are no moral standards to live by. Such obscenity is evident in behaviour and in the arts. How can we defend the truth from this giant?

c) False Religion: Mankind has invented gods and religions according to the dictates of his own heart. Every one of these is in opposition to the plain teachings of the Holy Bible. We live in an age when it is illegal to speak against this giant. This is certainly true regarding Islam. This angry giant seeks to dominate the world, whilst Christianity has almost been silenced by our government. How can we defend the truth from this giant?

d) Vain philosophy: This giant goes hand-in-hand with evolution. If he rejects God, or any god, then man usually takes up the standard of some philosophy. It may be Buddhism, Communism, or some other humanistic theory. The giant of vain philosophy is especially manifest in the governments of this world. There is nowhere on earth where the reigning government takes account of the word of God and sticks by it. This giant breeds corruption because he has no morality. How can we defend the truth against this giant?

The Church is Married to the World
The church was established by the Lord Jesus Christ to bring “light” to the nations of the world. Not to govern them, but to spread the only truth that can set men free. She has become one with the world and has lost her voice. Instead of discussing the truth, church leaders debate the legality of gay priests and women bishops. Our established churches have become whores following the Mother of Harlots. The church was meant to use the weapons and armour of God to defeat the giants in the land, but the giant has ridiculed her into submission and fear as Goliath did with Israel. Nevertheless, all giants can be defeated with the “rock” … the word of God. One little truth is mightier than the sword, spear and shield of the giant. They may curse us, but we must come against them in the name of the true God.

Our Culture is as Sodom
Not only the giant of sodomy parade through our land, but he shows absolutely no restraint. The sodomites, who were blinded by the angels when they demanded Lot to bring them out, persisted in trying to take them. Sodom was destroyed because this giant ruled Sodom’s society. Once looked on with fear (a crime), now he is adored and honoured in our land.

What’s the World coming to?
What answer can we give to those who ask such a question? The answer is simple … JUDGEMENT. This world is careering headlong into judgement and damnation. As they mocked Noah for proclaiming that the Flood was coming, so today Christianity is ridiculed for teaching about the Second Coming of Christ and the judgement which follows. The Flood came and so will Christ. “And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all” (Luke 17:26-27). There is a fine line between God’s mercy and His wrath. The world likes the Jesus of Christmas and rejects Him as King of kings and Judge of all nations. Because God is holy he must judge sin. When they call good evil, and evil good, we know that we are on the brink of destruction.

Is there Hope?
Nineveh had all the same giants that we have today. She repented when Jonah preached about the coming judgement. God suspended His wrath because the Ninevites destroyed the giants and honoured Him as Lord. Revival always follows repentance. About 150 later Nineveh permitted the giants to roam the land once again, and she was destroyed.

God was willing to suspend the destruction of Sodom if 10 righteous people could be found therein. He did not find them! Are there 10 righteous in our great city of Liverpool? Out of the millions that existed in that day only 8 people were saved from the Flood. “When the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8).

Jesus Christ is the only one who can save mankind from the coming judgement. The last judgement will not be suspended, but the righteous will be kept safe in the Ark (in Jesus). As believers we must like Noah, the preacher of righteousness, proclaim the truth to this fallen world. Our message is a simple one … we tell them that they have a choice between eternal life and eternal damnation. Their eternal existence is determined by either their acceptance or rejection of Christ.
