The Power of Jesus Christ (part 4)

Lord of Creation

Introduction

Those who hold to the teachings of Scripture believe that the universe and all it contains was created by God rather than through some evolutionary process. They also accept that the Lord Jesus Christ, as a member of the Godhead, is its Creator. The Bible presents Jesus as the Lord of Creation as well as Saviour.

All things were made by Him

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made … He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not” John 1:1-3, 10).

These verses teach that Jesus is the Creator of all things. This earth is the work of His hands since he formed the first man and woman, animals and vegetation.  We read in Genesis 1 that God spoke everything into being, which Psalm 33:6 confirms, “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.” As “The Word” we can see the Lord Jesus’ role in Creation.  Paul makes it very clear that everything came into existence through Christ, “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 3:9), and also in Hebrews 1:1-2 we read, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.”

That Jesus created all things is beyond doubt in Scripture. Neither men or angels have this creative ability, and if Christ is neither man or angel, then He must be God, and if He is God, then it follows that He must be the Creator. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him” (Colossians 1:16). The apostle John purposely draws our attention to Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created”, when he opens his gospel of Christ with, “In the beginning was the Word.” He desires his readers to understand that Jesus is the Lord of Creation. Those who reject Him as Creator are considered to be fools and bring upon themselves the wrath of God, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:18-22).

All things are upheld by Him

Not only is the Lord Jesus Christ responsible for creating everything, His power extends to upholding everything too. “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17). This verse teaches us that all creation is held together by His power, and without Him it would all fall part. One day He will remove His hands from this universe resulting in its complete destruction, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” (2 Peter 3:10-12). Who else but God has this power and authority? The One who created the universe with His hands will destroy it by removing them. He only has to say the word and it is all over, “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3).

The Lord Jesus claimed that He was there before anything existed, “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was” (John 17:5), and “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). Since He holds all things together by His power, this must include the fact that the universe, world governments, angels and demons continue to exist as long as He permits. The life of every man, woman and child is under His authority.

Conclusion

Liberal theologians, evolutionists and atheists reject the idea that Jesus is the Lord of Creation, yet those who have already entered Heaven know that it is true, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Revelation 4:11). David wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1), so as we look up into the night sky or observe the wonders of Creation, we see evidence of the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.
